Qualcomm is rolling out a firmware update to fix a critical security issue with its latest flagship smartphones.
The update for the Quadrant13, released today, fixes a critical issue with Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 fast charging technology.QC2, QCA3, QD2, and QD3 Fast Charging technologies use a proprietary technology to deliver up to 1,000% faster charging rates than traditional USB-C charging, but they also lack the fast charging capabilities of a standard USB-A port.
QCA is designed to deliver a maximum of 5A to each device at 100% charge speed, but a number of iPhone 6 Plus devices and iPhones running iOS 9.3.1 have been affected by this issue.
Qualcomm has been working to fix the issue since late October, but it didn’t officially announce the fix until today.
It was initially reported by MacRumors on September 30, but Apple didn’t comment on the report until today, as per our sources at TechCrunch.
While Qualcomm didn’t announce the fixes as a bug, the firmware update appears to fix one of the major weaknesses with the Qualcomm QuickCharge Fast Charger technology.
The bug is triggered by an iPhone 5s with an iOS 9 or iOS 10.3 firmware update, and if a user connects their iPhone 5 to their PC, they’ll receive an error message that states, “Please install QuickCharge 2.0 or later on your iPhone to fix this issue.”
The update fixes the issue and allows users to charge their iPhone 6 or 6 Plus to a higher rate.
While this is an incredibly important fix for iOS 9 users who were experiencing issues with the QuickCharge fast charging, it’s important to note that the fix is only available for devices running iOS 10, and that users should not update their iPhone to iOS 10 right away.
Apple’s Quick Charge 2.1 or higher fast charging solution uses a proprietary Qualcomm QuickCharger 2.3 technology that supports up to 2A per charge.
The latest version of iOS 9 now supports Qualcomm’s proprietary QuickCharge technology, which will allow the iPhone 6 to deliver more fast charging.
If you have an iPhone 6 with an AppleCare+ plan, you can use Qualcomm Quickcharge 2.4 fast charging as well, but we’d recommend not upgrading until you’ve tested out the new QuickCharge on a number, including iPhone 6 and iPhone SE owners.
